Supporting Parents as Media Mentors: Preschool in the Digital Age

In order to set parents up for a successful path to parenting in a technology-rich world, early childhood educators want to encourage media mentorship and engagement with kid’s technology. We want parents to “play what their kids play” and to plan for screen engagements that emphasize creativity and creation over consumption. While some control is also important (unsupervised Internet access or unlimited device time isn’t good for any preschooler), a mentoring approach and an open, curious attitude will go a long way in cultivating a positive family life in the digital age.

Since I have identified mentorship as a crucially distinguishing approach, I’ve worked to identify the factors for cultivating and disseminating a culture of mentorship around human/technology interactions in educational settings.
